As a South African resident, you can transfer a total of R11 million out of the country each year using your allowances. Taxpayers over the age of 18 who are South African residents are eligible for the following allowances:

  • R1 million single discretionary allowance (no tax clearance required from SARS)
  • R10 million foreign investment allowance (FIA tax clearance is required from SARS)

Can I open a bank account in Australia from South Africa?

Yes you can open an Australian Bank account while you are still in South Africa. The four biggest banks in Australia are ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, NAB and Westpac. You can open a bank account online with any of these banks prior to your departure. On arrival in Australia, you will need to visit a branch to activate your account so you can start making withdrawals.
