Australia remains a top destination choice for South Africans

‘Brand Australia’ is recognised all over the world. The very mention of the word Australia evokes images of stunning scenery and a friendly bloke throwing ‘another shrimp on the barbie’!

Australia remains one of the top destinations for South African’s moving abroad and it’s easy to see why.

All year-round sunshine, friendly people, the English language (well sort of!) and wide-open spaces all combine to make Australia a very desirable place to live.

It’s understandable why so many people are looking to settle there.

The impact of Covid on Australias Migration Program

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on Australia’s migration program.

International borders remain closed. Travel restrictions both in Australia and around the world have brought migration applications and temporary visa approvals to a grinding holt.

According to statistics published by the Australian Department of Home Affairs. Between 2019–20, there were 153k people added to Australia’s population via migration, and almost 6.5 million temporary visas granted. This is significantly lower than the previous years 179k permanent placements and nearly 9 million temporary visas issued.

Interestingly enough, of the 153,000 permanent migration places issued, 95,843 were attributed to the Skills Stream program. This demonstrates Australia’s ongoing commitment to its migration skills program.

But according to “Grattan” an Australian Think Tank. There is a problem with Australia’s skilled migration program. They claim it has shifted from selecting younger skilled people towards older people with poor English language skills who bring less to the Australian community.

Grattan are going even further to argue that skilled migrants pay more in taxes than they receive in public benefits, so it makes more sense to take in high income earners with specialised skills.
