Supporting start-ups amid the devastating effects of COVID-19

We’re proud to be the transaction partner for a start-up, Rogue and Vogue, a fitness clothing range born from the effects of Covid- 19 on personal trainers in South Africa.

Lucy Fillmore, was a Personal Trainer at Virgin Active. When Health Clubs closed in March, it was clear, they wouldn’t re-open any time soon. And, even if they did, it wouldn’t be the same. She promptly resigned and started her own business importing Ryderwear clothing from Australia. At the time this leap of faith seemed to be outrageous, but through selecting the right partners to work with there is finally light at the end of the tunnel.

Lucy had the vision and insight to see there was a massive gap in the market for products that are innovative, fashionable, and comfortable.  With more people wearing gym gear as all day wear, Lucy felt that well-known brands had missed the mark with their range and found a supplier that designed for both fashion and fitness, but they were based in Australia!

Lucy soon, realised that importing products was not for the faint hearted and was met with the challenges of importing retail products. Lucy, felt stuck and hopeless,

I soon realised, it was expensive and the import duties were high (45%). There are so many variables & complexities to deal with like: exchange rate fluctuation, buying and transferring money to pay for the goods and understanding what you can and can’t do in terms of exchange controls.”

We were pleased to be the ones who eventually helped Lucy with the entire process, FX Paymaster managed to help guide her through the process, saving her time and money. She was able to place her order and pay for it at reasonable fees. Her products soon landed in SA at a price that would allow her to still be competitive while making a profit. A viable business was born and in the middle of Covid-19.

Lucy’s story is one of many who have managed to re-invent their future in the light of a pandemic, all because she never gave up and chose the right partner from the start!
